It can be hard to find things to do in the summer that are inexpensive. Lucky for you, we gathered a few ideas to make sure you make the most of your summer without having to spend too much money!

Drive-in Theaters

The drive-in theater is one of the most classic summer activities. It is also one of the most easily forgotten activities of the summer. Unfortunately, this means that most of them have closed, however, there are a few theaters still showing movies in Kansas! Starlite drive-in in Wichita is one of them. You can visit their website, https://starlitefun.com/, for showtimes. Another drive-in still running is Boulevard Drive-In in Merriam, Kansas. Showtimes can be viewed here, http://boulevarddrivein.com/wordpress/. The drive-in is cheap and family-friendly. It is a great way to spend a warm summer night!

Zoos

There is certainly no shortage of zoos in the Kansas and Nebraska area. From the well-known Omaha Zoo to the smaller, but still very enjoyable, zoos such as the Rolling Hills Zoo, Sedgwick County Zoo or Topeka Zoo you will definitely have no shortage of choices! With so many zoos scattered throughout the area, this makes visiting the zoo a perfect weekend activity for you and your family. If you’re looking for a cheap activity while babysitting this summer, the zoo is perfect for that too!

Farmers Markets

We won’t point you to a specific farmers market. Why you ask? Because there’s far too many for us to pinpoint just a few! Your local farmers market will be full of delicious fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade goods and so much more. What better way to shop local than to buy produce grown and harvested by your local farmers?!

Museums

No one ever said you can’t learn when you’re on summer break! While the summer is a great time to do activities outside, sometimes you still need something to do on a rainy day or to just stay cool. There are many museums in our area on a variety of topics. The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson is one of my favorites. Learn all about space and see amazing artifacts from space travels!

The Oz Museum in Wamego is a must see as well. All the fun things to view will have you clicking your heels (but certainly not because you’ll want to go home!) The Aviation museum in Wichita is another exciting way to spend a day. What better place to learn about the history of flight than in the air capitol of the world?

We’ve left so many other exciting summer activities off, but we simply can’t list them all. Rodeos, fairs, concerts, festivals, the list goes on and on. And you can do all of these things without breaking the bank! Next time your friends tell you Kansas or Nebraska are flyover states, send them our way. We couldn’t even fit all our ideas into one blog post. Don’t just sit on the couch this summer, pick an activity and go explore your state.
