I graduated college with an Associates of Applied Science in Physical Therapy degree and practiced as a Physical Therapist Assistant in Missouri for nearly ten years before becoming a banker.
I loved my career, my patients, my coworkers, and the hospital I worked for – and, now looking back, I had no clue how lucky I was to have that straight out of college.
I was born with a neuromuscular disease called Charcot Marie Tooth, and while I was healthy and “able” to do pretty much anything while I was younger, the time came that I needed reconstructive surgery on both ankles. I had them both done within about three years of each other. In the middle of that, I fell and broke one ankle requiring another surgery that was NOT planned! Inevitably, I became the patient. What a ride that has been!
Around the same time, I met my husband, and we made the decision to move to Kansas. I thought it was an opportunity to reinvent myself since I was making a huge life change anyway; I’d have to get a new license to practice PT in Kansas and I no longer had the stability to practice PT as I had been doing for years.
It was very scary to make a big change like that! I went through some tumultuous jobs until I happened to interview for a job at Central National Bank. The interviewer saw something in me even though my answer to every question was, “I don’t know, but I can LEARN!”
I’m still thankful, five years later, that I gave banking a chance!
